'An Impressive Display' - Panoply
I have been involved with dogs and horses most of my life. The first dog I remember was my mother's Whippet x Rough Collie dog, Kim. A real softie, with a turn of speed that was quite breath taking.
Next was an Irish Setter from the Irish Setter Rescue called Max. He lived up to his nickname 'Mad max' and was a great companion whilst out hacking.
A Golden retriever was next named by my brother 'Goldie', as in Goldilocks and the three Barrs!! The gundogs definitely appealed to me more and fitted in well with our lifestyle of eventing and tetrathlons with the horses. I did not start showing dogs until 1995 when I started with a Welsh Springer Spaniel - Highclare Country Member - 'Tom' to his mates! I lived next door to Gill Tully for about two years and became more interested in the world of showing through Gill's amusing anecdotes. With Gill and Christine McDonald as my mentors my showing skills were slowly hoed and the seeds for working Tom were planted. Tom became a dual purpose Welsh Springer Spaniel and taught me a lot. However, I still yearned for a Pointer and could often be found round the Pointer ring. I found the Pointer was the 'Thoroughbred of the dog world'. I loved the aristocratic look, their movement, speed and nature. My wish soon came true. In 1996 I bought two litter brothers from John Thirlwell. I could not choose between the two and decided I would keep both - 'Fabian' (Sh Ch Ferndel Fabian from Panoply) and 'Blaze' (Ferndel Lucky Strike of Panoply). The boys were my foundation dogs, both adored showing and surpassed any expectations I might have had when first presented with them. I registered my affix 'Panoply' after finding the word in a Readers' Digest word search whilst sitting in the waiting room at a dental practice. Panoply - impressive display or show - yes, that fitted the bill to a 't'.
Panoply Today: The kennel has slowly increased in numbers; initially two Crankross girls - Crankross Luck be a lady at Panoply (Pebbles) and Crankross Classic Minuet (Amy).
Pebbles went on to join the Sharnphilly Weimaraners for their daughter to show in junior handling and to become their foundation bitch for pointers. Amy unfortunately passed away at 2½ years of age due to acute kidney failure.
Mollie (Kiswahili Star of Africa via Panoply) was the next to join us. 'Blaze' had been used at stud by the Walklings on their bitch Sedgekirk Sooner or Later of Kiswahili (Jessica), and a 'naughty but nice' orange and white girl came to join us.
'Mollie' is my foundation bitch and has done us proud, some of her progeny are:
- Panoply Star Prospect - Star
- Panoply Silver Wizard - Harry
- Panoply Simply Special - EJ
- Panoply Dancing Brave - Zebedee
- Panoply Golden Dancer - Lily
'EJ' has taken over maternal duties in between training for working, and has produced:
- Panoply Fabians Fanfare - Tango
- Panoply Fabians Gift of Gold - Doris
- Panoply Poetry in Motion - Evie
- Panoply Ahead of the Game - Jacques
These obviously were not the only progeny and I have been fortunate with the lovely homes other Panoply puppies have gone to. Some have even come back for another
